NEW DELHI: The government on Friday said it would release additional quantity of sugar in the open market if there is a requirement.
"We have ample stocks of sugar. There is no problem. If required, we will release additional quantity," Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar told reporters on the sidelines of a biofuel seminar organised by CII at Gurgaon.
Any decision on the release would have to be taken by the Cabinet Committee on Prices, which is scheduled to meet next week to review the price situation in the country.
He was replying to a query whether the government has plans to release additional stocks to curb the rise in sugar prices. The Centre has recently released additional 5 lakh tons (LT) of sugar for August and September.
Meanwhile, the Food Ministry in a statement today said that it is monitoring the monthly release of 9 LT of sugar in the open market, besides the additional release of 5 LT during August and September, along with the quantity to be released from dismantled buffer stock.
It also said that show cause notices are being issued to the defaulting firms for violation of rules.
Over 250 sugar mills have been issued notices to explain why they have not informed the government about the quantity of sugar released in the open market from their buffer stocks.
The Centre has dismantled the buffer stocks of 50 LT, maintained in two tranches 20 LT and 30 LT. As per the notification, the mills were allowed to sell the buffer stock of 20 LT in the domestic market at any point of time during May-September without seeking the monthly release orders from the government. Out of the remaining 30 LT, millers are to sell 7.5 LT during August and September and the remaining 22.5 LT at any time during October. (The Economic Times)
