New Delhi, Oct 1 (PTI) Oilseed output this kharif season
is projected to rise by 4 per cent to 175.5 lakh tonnes (LT),
according to Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade
(COOIT), though lower than the recent government estimates.
According to the industry estimate, the production of
oilseeds touched 168.9 LT in 2007-08.
The government, while announcing the first advance kharif
estimate last week, pegged the output at 179.47 LT.
The difference in the estimates stemmed from the gap
between projections about groundnut, soyabean and toria. While
COOIT has provided more optimistic outlook about soyabean at
107 LT, apparently prompted by a higher acreage and conducive
crop condition, the government's assessment has pegged it at
99.42 LT.
Similarly, the government estimate has been much higher
in the case of groundnut at 60.95 LT, though COOIT has been
more conservative in its estimate and pegged it at 49 LT.
Moreover, the oil body has factored in a toria output of
2 LT, which the government has not mentioned in its own
estimate. The difference of projections in other crops have
been more or less marginal.
The production of soyabean, groundnut and toria in
2007-08 stood at 94.6 LT, 52.7 LT and 2 LT, respectively.
COOIT has estimated the sunflower seed output at 3.5 LT,
against the government's projection of 3.14 LT, while sesame
seed production is likely to touch 3.50 LT, compared with
government's estimate of 5.63 LT.
The castor seed output is expected to touch 10 LT,
according to COOIT, whereas the government has projected it at
9.31 LT.
