MUMBAI, Sept 1 (Reuters) - India has fixed the quota for free sale sugar in the month of September at 1.2 million tonnes, below market expectations, a source in the department of food and public distribution told Reuters late on Monday.
The federal government, which controls the sector, had set millers a sales quota of 3 million tonnes in the quarter ending September, including 900,000 tonnes in September, down from 3.6 million tonnes in the same period last year.
Later, in August the government raised supplies for Sept by 300,000 tonnes to ease prices.
