MSP for rabi to be decided soon

The cabinet may decide the minimum support prices for rabi crop soon as sowing of wheat, gram and mustard has begun.
The agriculture ministry has sent the price recommendations of the commission for agricultural costs and prices (CACP) that suggested raising MSP of winter-sown crops between 5 per cent and 8 per cent. The decision may not be announced immediately as it would need approval of the poll panel, sources said.
Agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh, who was away in Bihar for electioneering, has retuned to Delhi to attend the meeting so that a decision is taken at the earliest, sources said.
CACP had suggested that MSP for wheat be increased to Rs 1,525 per quintal from Rs 1,450 and that of mustard to Rs 3,350 per quintal from Rs 3,100. MSP for gram should be raised to Rs 3,425 per quintal from Rs 3,175, barley to Rs 1,225 from Rs 1,150 and lentil to Rs 3,325 from Rs 3,075, they said.
Sowing of rabi crops begins in October and is harvested in April. The government normally announces MSPs before sowing picks up to help farmers take a decision on which crops to grow.
The 7.9 per cent increase in MSP for gram will help the government raise the output of pulses as it has set a 132.78 million tonne production target in the ensuing winter season. Last year, gram crop was damaged in many areas and the government had to import the commodity to meet the demand.
