New Delhi. India’s 2015-16 cotton production is set to decline because of lower
acreage and white fly attack in Punjab and Haryana though recent rains in
Gujarat, Maharashtra and Telangana benefitted the crop , said officials of
agriculture ministry and Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) Tuesday.
India’s
cotton sowing declined 8% to 11.47 million hectare until Sep 11 due to weak
rains in Jul and Aug, agriculture ministry data showed.
During
2014-15, India produced 39 million bales cotton down from 39.8 million bales in
the previous year, Cotton Advisory Board (CAB) data showed.
“Lower
acreage will definitely hit the cotton output this year. Apart from this,
attack of white fly insect in some parts of Punjab Haryana too will impact the
overall output,” said a senior official of agriculture ministry.
Recent rains in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana may
help the standing crops, the official added.
Monsoon rains have revived over some parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra,
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, according to India Met Department (IMD)
These 4 states have nearly 70% share in country’s total output.
Last
these states produced 2.75 million bales.
“Cotton
output may be between 37 million to 3.8 million bales,” a senior official of
CCI said.
Rains
will help the standing crops in several parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat and
Telangana and output may match last year’s level but loss in north India due to
white fly and lack of rains may be substantial, the official said.
“Last
year output in north India, comprising Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, was 5.6
million bales but this year it may be 4.6 million bales due to weak rains and
attack of white fly,” the official said.....R S Rana
