New Delhi. Amid fears of drought during the current year as so far overall rainfall is 84%
of the normal, the agriculture ministry has convened a meeting of state
government officials to discuss strategy for the sowing of forthcoming rabi
crops.
“A meeting of top officials of all the
states has been called on Sep 22-23 to discuss the strategy to for the ensuing
rabi crop sowing amid fears of drought in several parts of the country,” a
senior official of agriculture ministry said.
The
two day conference will be inaugurated by Farm Minister Radha Mohan Singh and
will be attended other junior ministers along with senior officials and
scientists of the agriculture ministry.
“The meeting will also discuss the kharif
crop prospects and may release first advance estimates for the current year,”
the official said.
As on Sep 11, India’s kharif crop sowings
stood at 101.2 million hectare, up 2% on year on the back of surplus rains in
Jun.
However, later lack of adequate rains may
impact the yield resulting decline in output.
“So far monsoon rains are 16% below normal
posing threat to standing kharif crops and sowing of coming rabi crops,” said
the official.
Government will also discuss the
availability of seed, fertilizer and water availability in the reservoirs of
the country.
Sowing of rabi crops generally begins in
October and picks up in Nov. Wheat, gram and mustard seed are the major rabi
crops.
