(Hindi Moneycantrol.com)

Gold falls for fourth day on sustained selling, global cues

New Delhi, Apr 2. Gold fell for the fourth straight day as prices shed Rs 10 to Rs 29,250 per 10 grams in the national capital today on sustained selling by stockists against sluggish demand amid a weakening global trend. Silver also lost Rs 100 to Rs 43,400 per kg on lack of buying support from industrial units and coin makers. Traders said sustained selling by stockists against sluggish demand amid a weakening global trend mainly led to decline in gold prices. Gold in New York, which normally sets price trend on the domestic front, fell by 0.39 per cent to USD 1,280.80 an ounce. They said investors shifting funds from weakening bullion to climbing equities reduced the metal's demand. On the domestic front, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity declined by Rs 10 each to Rs 29,250 and Rs 29,050 per ten grams, respectively, after losing Rs 90 in last three days. Sovereign, however, held steady at Rs 24,900 per piece of eight grams. Silver ready fell by Rs 100 to Rs 43,400 per kg while weekly-based delivery recovered by Rs 485 to Rs 42,640 per kg. Silver coins also tumbled by Rs 2,000 to Rs 80,000 for buying and Rs 81,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

Sugar production dips 7% till March this year: ISMA

New Delhi, Apr 2. The country's sugar production has dropped by 7 per cent to 21.5 million tonnes in the first six months of the current marketing year due to lower output in key producing states, according to industry body ISMA. The production stood at 23.1 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year. In an official release, Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said that barring Karnataka, sugar output declined in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu till March of the 2013-14 marketing year (October-September). About 330 mills were crushing sugarcane till March this year, against 231 mills in the year-ago period, it said. As per ISMA's latest data, sugar output in Maharashtra -- the country's leading producer -- remained down by 9 per cent at 7.01 million tonnes till March as compared with 7.73 million tonnes in the year-ago period. The sugar recovery was 11.3 per cent in Maharashtra. As many as 85 mills are still crushing sugarcane in the state, as against 42 mills a year ago. Similarly, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh -- the country's second biggest producer -- was down by 13 per cent at 5.8 million tonnes so far in 2013-14 from 6.7 million tonnes in the same period last year due to poor yields and higher diversion to alternate sweeteners manufacturing industry. The sugar recovery was 9.21 per cent. About 86 mills are still crushing in the state. Production in Tamil Nadu declined by 28 per cent at 9,50,000 tonnes till March this year, while the output in Andhra Pradesh fell to 9,40,000 tonnes from 9,66,000 tonnes in the year-ago period. In Andhra Pradesh, 12 mills are still crushing sugarcane and expected to close in the next 15 days. However, sugar production in Karnataka has increased by 12 per cent to 3.75 million tonnes till March as compared with 3.36 million tonnes in the same period last year on account of better yields and good recovery. About 43 mills are still crushing sugarcane in the state, the release added. ISMA also mentioned that farmers in major sugar producing states are yet to be paid about Rs 15,000 crore for the total cane purchased till now in the current sugar season. Of which Rs 10,500 crore has to be paid to farmers in Uttar Pradesh and Rs 3,300 crore in Karnataka, it added.

(BS Hindi)

(Business Bhaskar.....R S Rana)

Gold extends losses on sustained selling, global cues

New Delhi, Apr 1. Extending losses for the third straight day, gold prices fell by Rs 40 to Rs 29,260 per ten gram in the national capital today on sustained offerings by stockists on the back of weak global trend. However, silver snapped its two-day weak trend and gained Rs 100 to Rs 43,500 per kg on increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. The white metal had lost Rs 139 in the previous two sessions. Traders said sustained offerings by stockists on the back of weak global trend, as investors weighed the outlook for the Fed's monetary policy after improving economic growth, mainly reduced demand for gold as an alternate investment. Gold in Singapore, which normally sets price trend on the domestic front, fell by 0.5 per cent to USD 1,278.20 an ounce, the lowest since February 11. Investors diverting their funds from weakening bullion to equity markets, which surged to record high, also influenced the sentiment to some extent, they said. On the domestic front, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity remained under selling pressure and declined by Rs 40 each to Rs 29,260 and Rs 29,060 per ten gram respectively. It had shed Rs 55 in last two days. Meanwhile, sovereign recovered by Rs 200 to Rs 24,900 per piece of eight gram on select buying. On the other hand, silver ready recovered by Rs 100 to Rs 43,500 per kg while weekly-based delivery lost Rs 620 at Rs 42,155 per kg on lack of speculators buying support. Silver coins spurted by Rs 2,000 to Rs 82,000 for buying and Rs 83,000 for selling of 100 pieces on upsurge in demand at existing lower levels.

Govt extends ban on pulses export till further orders

New Delhi, Apr 1. The government has today extended the ban on export of pulses till further orders, but allowed outbound shipments of kabuli chana, organic pulses and lentils with some riders. "Prohibition on export of pulses has been extended till further orders. But, there are two exceptions to this. One is export of Kabuli Chana. "Second is export of organic pulses and lentils; but with a ceiling of 10,000 million tonnes per annum and subject to certain conditions," Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has said in a notification. Export of pulses was initially prohibited for a period of six months in 2006 which was extended from time-to-time. The last extension was up to yesterday. Now, the prohibition is being extended till further orders. Although India is the largest producer of pulses, it has to import about 3 million tonnes (MT) of pulses to meet the domestic demand. As per the government estimate, the country is expected to produce 19.8 MT of pulses this year, which includes 9.8 MT of chana crop, while trade figures says only 6.5 MT of chana crop this year. Official figures show that India imported around 1.4 MT of pulses between April to September 2013. The other conditions for export of organic pulses and lentils include that it should be duly certified by Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). "Export contracts should be registered with APEDA, New Delhi prior to shipment; Exports shall be allowed only from Customs EDI (electronic data interchange) Ports," it added.
