India lags behind peers in coconut processing & exports: Pawar

New Delhi, Feb 11. India is lagging behind peers in processing of coconuts products and exports even as production has improved, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar today said. "India has emerged as global leader in coconut production and productivity, but we are lagging behind in processing, value addition and exports," Pawar said after presenting national awards for best coconut growers for 2012. The country's position is 22nd in the world as far as manufacturing of coconut products are concerned, while it is 25th place in case of exports, he said. Pawar presented the 2012 national award for best coconut farmer to B A Nagaraj from Karnataka, best palm climber to Paul Varghese and Sudheerkumar T from Kerala, and best exporter to Indo German Carbons Ltd from Kerala. A total of 16 awards were presented under various categories. Noting that the growth in coconut processing and exports has not picked up, Pawar said because 98 per cent of coconut farmers in India are small, marginal and unorganised. "Hence, they are not in a position to reap benefits of various programmes implemented by various agencies," he said. In order to address this problem, the minister mentioned that the Coconut Development Board has initiated formation of coconut producer societies and federations to ensure farmers avail incentives declared by the government for this year. The product diversification through use of modern technologies can help farmers get better price, he added. Speaking on the occasion, Food Minister K V Thomas said there are more good reasons to promote coconut oil as imports are required to meet over half of India's edible oil demand. "At present, coconut oil contributes only about 4 per cent to the total production of edible oils in the country. Increase in production of coconut oil will contribute to availability of edible oil and thereby will help in reducing imports," he said. Coconut is cultivated in 21 states. India's share in world coconut production is 26.34 per cent and is the highest, Total export of coconut and its allied products stood at Rs 1,022 crore last year.

Gold gains on dollar, physical demand

London, Feb 11. Gold today gained to the highest since November in the best run since August as a weakened dollar spurred demand for an alternative asset and physical buying increased. Gold rose 0.8 per cent to USD 1,285.17 an ounce, the highest since November 18 and is up for a fifth day in the best run since August 28. Silver also added 0.5 per cent to USD 20.16 an ounce, and an eighth successive daily advance would be the longest since August 16. The Dollar Spot Index, a measure against 10 major currencies, reached a four-week low before Federal chairperson delivers her first testimony to US lawmakers. Bullion capped a 1.8 per cent weekly advance February 7 as US jobs growth data missed estimates. Gold slumped by the most since 1981 last year as some investors lost faith in the metal as a store of value. Bullion rebounded this year as global equities and emerging markets weakened and lower gold prices spurred physical demand.

Gold, silver advance on sustained buying, firm global cues

New Delhi, Feb 11. Gold advanced further by Rs 130 to Rs 30,800 per ten grams in the national capital today on sustained buying for the ongoing marriage season amid a firming global trend. Silver shot up by Rs 105 to Rs 45,130 per kg on increased offtake by jewellers and industrial units. However, a divergent trend was noticed in Mumbai, as gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity rose for the second straight day by adding Rs 120 each to Rs 30,600 and Rs 30,450 per ten grams, respectively on seasonal demand, while silver shed Rs 50 to Rs 45,800 per kg on lack of buying support. Traders said frantic buying by stockists and jewellers to meet the rising ongoing marriage season demand mainly kept the precious metals higher for the second day. They said an upsurge was further supported by firming global trend where gold rallied as investors assessed further cuts to US stimulus and increased buying in China. Gold in Singapore, which normally sets price trend on the domestic front, rose by one per cent to USD 1,287.81 an ounce, the highest price since November 18 and silver by 0.2 per cent to USD 20.11 an ounce. At the domestic front, gold of 99.9 and 99.5 per cent purity rose by Rs 130 each to Rs 30,800 and Rs 30,600 per ten grams, respectively. It had climbed Rs 470 yesterday. Silver coins continued to be asked at last level of Rs 86,000 for buying and Rs 87,000 for selling of 100 pieces. In a similar fashion, silver ready rose by Rs 105 to Rs 45,130 per kg and weekly-based delivery by a similar margin to Rs 44,880 per kg. The white metal had gained Rs 405 in last the trading session. However, silver coins remained steady at Rs 86,000 for buying and Rs 87,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

bs hindi

( bshindi

(BS Hindi)

(Business Bhaskar...R S Rana)
