Mixed trend in essential commodities

NEW DELHI: Retail prices of essential commodities have either remained stable or shown mixed trend for the week ended July 25, a government statement said on Wednesday.

According to the data maintained by the Consumer Affairs Ministry, wheat prices remained steady in major cities of the country except for an increase in Lucknow.

Prices of sugar, however, witnessed some fluctuations, with rates increasing in Delhi and Mumbai and declining in Bhubaneswar and Bangalore.

Gram prices saw some upward movement in Delhi, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati and Chennai. However, the prices fell in Mumbai and Thiruvanthapuram.

Prices of tur dal, too, became dearer in Lucknow, Bhubaneswar, Bangalore, Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram and cheaper in Delhi and Mumbai.

In Delhi, prices of rice, sugar, and groundnut oil remained stable for one week. Vanaspati prices stayed unaffected for a month. Prices of wheat, atta, milk and salt held steady during the last six months.

State-owned trading firms have contracted to import about 1.4 million tons of pulses, of which about 1.22 million tons have already arrived and 1.10 million tons have been disposed till date. The pulses being imported include urad, moong, tur and yellow peas. - PTI
